Vapour barriers

Eurovent® CLIMA X montaż

A wide range of certified vapour control membranes and foils, from active vapour control membranes with low Sd values to vapour barriers with very high Sd values, including reflective membranes that reflect thermal radiation and fire-resistant solutions. They are widely used in residential and industrial construction for the insulation of attics, floors, and walls in masonry, timber, timber-frame, CLT, prefabricated, passive, and modular building technologies.

Eurovent® vapour control membranes act as an effective vapour control layer in roof assemblies, floors, and walls, supporting the control and regulation of indoor humidity levels. In addition, membranes from the Eurovent® CLIMA and AKTIV series can also be installed on the external side in pitched roofs—both with full boarding and without boarding.

Active Eurovent® vapour control membranes feature a variable diffusion resistance range, with Sd values from 2 m to 10 m. They are equipped with a special functional film that protects against uncontrolled water vapour flow while allowing controlled diffusion—small amounts of vapour can migrate through the membrane, enabling the drying of the building envelope and preventing condensation. This distinctive property gives the product its so-called vapour control “activity”.

Vapour barriers are membranes and foils characterised by very high diffusion resistance, with Sd values of ≥ 100 m. They act as a barrier against the migration of water vapour from the interior of the building towards the attic, floors, or walls.

FAQ

Good to know

What role does a vapour control layer play in roofs, walls, and floors?

A vapour control layer limits the uncontrolled flow of water vapour from the interior of the building into structural layers. It protects thermal insulation against moisture, prevents water vapour condensation, and helps maintain stable thermal and humidity conditions inside the building.

What is the difference between an active vapour control membrane and a traditional vapour barrier?

Active vapour control membranes have a variable diffusion resistance (Sd), which allows controlled water vapour migration in both directions. Vapour barriers are characterised by very high Sd values and completely block water vapour transmission.

Why is the Sd value crucial when selecting a vapour control layer?

The Sd value defines a material’s ability to limit water vapour diffusion. Selecting the appropriate Sd allows the vapour control layer to be matched to the type of construction, building usage, and indoor humidity levels.

Where are vapour control membranes with variable diffusion resistance used?

Active membranes are used in pitched roofs, floors, and walls, particularly in energy-efficient and passive buildings, as well as in timber-frame, CLT, and prefabricated constructions.

Which vapour control solution works best where moisture protection and easy installation are essential?

For such applications, Eurovent® AKTIV is recommended—an active vapour control membrane with stable performance that supports the removal of excess moisture and provides durable protection of roof or wall layers, while also ensuring easy installation.

How can periodic moisture in roof or wall insulation be addressed without the risk of “trapping” it?

In such cases, active vapour control membranes with a variable Sd value, such as Eurovent® CLIMA X, are used. They allow controlled water vapour diffusion and support the drying process of the insulation layer. This solution is particularly recommended for energy-efficient and passive buildings.
