UV resistance

Membrany Eurovent, odporność UV

UV resistance refers to the material’s ability to withstand exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This factor is one of the key parameters affecting the durability of a roof membrane, as the polymers used in its production are sensitive to UV radiation.

Additives that improve UV resistance help reduce the negative effects of solar exposure. However, prolonged exposure of the membrane without the final roof covering – meaning continuous exposure to UV radiation – can significantly weaken the material and may reduce the overall service life of the product. The absence of stabilising additives may lead to physical degradation and faster deterioration of the technical performance of the roof membrane.

The impact of UV radiation on roof membranes can be divided into direct exposure, occurring during installation when the membrane is temporarily exposed on the roof, and indirect exposure, which may occur, for example, when UV radiation penetrates the attic space through roof windows, roof hatches or gaps in the load-bearing structure of the roof covering.

Depending on the duration of exposure and the intensity of UV radiation, it is recommended that the final roof covering be installed as soon as possible, and no later than 4 weeks after the roof membrane has been installed. Thanks to the use of UV-stabilising additives, this period does not significantly affect the performance or functional properties of the membrane.

Within 12 weeks from the installation of the roof membrane, its exposure to indirect UV radiation should be limited by fully covering it with thermal insulation or by darkening the attic space. Otherwise, UV radiation penetrating the attic may negatively affect the properties of the roof membrane and lead to structural changes in the material.

Key points:

  • The lower the exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the longer the service life of the roof membrane.
  • To eliminate exposure to harmful UV radiation, the final roof covering should be installed as soon as possible, and no later than 4 weeks after the roof membrane installation.
  • Within 12 weeks of membrane installation, the attic should be darkened or thermal insulation installed to limit the impact of indirect UV radiation on the roof membrane.
